A honeymoon destination India hasn’t discovered yet

A honeymoon destination India hasn't discovered yetAsk a newly engaged Indian couple where they are honeymooning, and the answer is often the Maldives, Seychelles or Bali. These iconic destinations have long inspired honeymoon dreams. But there is another Indian Ocean escape that many couples have yet to discover.

Set on Sri Lanka’s quieter east coast, it offers the same turquoise-water intimacy and barefoot luxury, but with something more: an entire country to explore, experience and fall in love with, waiting just beyond the resort gates.

A honeymoon destination India hasn't discovered yet

Pasikudah Bay: A coastline built for quiet romance

Sri Lanka‘s east coast doesn’t get talked about the way its south does, and that’s part of its charm. Located 35 kilometres north-west of Batticaloa, lies the Pasikudah Bay, a desolate, curved stretch of shallow, coral-fringed water, so calm it barely qualifies as sea. The gentle, translucent lagoon waters, soft powdery-white sands, sedate beachline with swaying palms, and spectacular sunsets give you the sense of being tucked away from the world.

The real draw though is the distinct stillness of the east coast, the unhurried pace at which the day gradually unfolds accompanied by the sound of small fishing boats and the occasional breeze off the ocean. For wellness couples drawn to slow mornings and intentional rituals, wading into the glassy, warm turquoise waters and standing hand-in-hand, as the light shifts across the horizon, this is as close to meditation as a beach can get.

Sitting directly on the sand of this tropical paradise is Sun Siyam Pasikudah, a design-forward boutique retreat offering a rare blend of intimate luxury, cultural immersion and thoughtful intention. The moment you enter the property you will realise that it is unlike any sprawling conventional resort. Just 34 villas across five pavilion types, each a generous 118 square metres of open-plan layouts, tropical outdoor bathrooms, and balconies or terraces that extend the living space into the surrounding landscape. Part of the Privé Collection within Sun Siyam, its design language celebrates local craftsmanship through bespoke joinery, woven textures, reclaimed wood and earthy materials, creating interiors that feel distinctly Sri Lankan. The resort’s 30-metre split-level infinity pool sits directly on the beach and offers the finest vantage point on the property.

Barefoot luxury with a cultural compass

It is within these pavilions that Sun Siyam Pasikudah’s honeymoon programming comes to life. For couples who do not want to build an itinerary from scratch, the resort’s Romantic Escape offer, and Ultimate Honeymoon experience moves past the standard rose-petal-turndown routine; folding in romantic candlelit beach dinners, traditional rituals, and curated experiences designed to elevate every moment of the honeymoon.

Couples can wake up to unhurried sunrises and begin the day with an intimate floating breakfast on their private pool, overlooking the ocean; followed by private couples’ spa. Staffed entirely by skilled local therapists, the spa is grounded in the island’s own knowledge, blending modern rituals with Ayurvedic traditions, hot oil treatments, herbal soaks, lymphatic drainage, Thai massage, coffee scrubs and post-sun aloe vera wraps, giving couples a genuine Sri Lankan wellness experience.

Beyond the spa, the property offers yoga sessions facing the ocean at dawn, guided meditation, and gentle water-based activities like stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and snorkelling along Pasikudah’s famously calm, shallow waters.

With one of the longest intimate beaches in the country, couples can take a stroll while enjoying the majestic sunsets on the east coast. Signature Experiences like Cinema by Moonlight, Secret Sundowners, Treasure Hunt, and Plant-based bliss are designed to pull guests beyond the sunbed and into a deeper engagement with the destination. Beachside bonfire nights under the stars along with the weekly Sri Lankan Roots showcase, and traditional live Kandyan dancing offer a romantic celebration of Sri Lankan culture. And the star evening attraction, the Aqua Lounge, a solar-powered, floating wooden platform above the bay’s calm waters serving a seven-course menu, becomes the most quietly romantic dinner setting on the island.

Beyond the beach: A destination in itself

But the real depth of this destination reveals itself the moment you step outside the gates, there is an entire country waiting to explore, and it happens to hold some of Asia’s more underrated cultural ground.

A short inland drive takes you to Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of ancient ruins best explored at dawn by bicycle. Minneriya National Park, famous for its wild elephant herds, sits not much further. Kaudulla National Park, Dambulla’s vast cave temple complex with its 2,100 square metres of murals and 160 historic sculptures, and Sigiriya’s lion rock fortress are each within a meaningful day trip. Trincomalee, 108 kilometres north, is among the finest whale-watching destinations in the Indian Ocean. Batticaloa carries centuries of Dutch colonial history in its lagoons and streets and worth an afternoon visit.

Closer to the resort, guided excursions run through local food markets, centuries-old temples, and village life on a half-day cultural excursion. One recurring favourite among guests is a hands-on Sri Lankan cooking class that starts at the market, picking ingredients, discovering culinary gems and ends with the couple cooking their own meal on the beach with a resident chef for a bespoke lunch.

A feast of flavours and heritage

The food story is a point of difference in itself. Sun Siyam Pasikudah’s plant-based, vegan-inspired cuisine champions conscious cooking, with much of its produce sourced from the local community. At the same time, it celebrates authentic Sri Lankan flavours through regional favourites like Batticaloa-style crab curry, mutton curry, kottu and lentil dal. That connection to the local community extends beyond the plate. The resort works closely with nearby villages to support traditional cultural dance groups, bringing authentic performances into the guest experience as a living expression of eastern Sri Lanka’s heritage. Couples can also enjoy relaxed bites at The Beach Shack, intimate dinners in the Wine Cellar, or unwind over rare, single-origin Sri Lankan teas at The Tea House.

A story that unfolds, not just a stay

Perhaps that is what makes Sun Siyam Pasikudah such a compelling honeymoon destination. It delivers everything couples seek in an idyllic island escape—turquoise waters, barefoot luxury, private villas and unforgettable sunsets; but adds a sense of place too. Better still, it comes into its own between May and September, when much of Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts experience the monsoon, while the east coast enjoys its long, glorious dry season while; the sea turns glass-like, the skies are clear, and the beaches feel wonderfully untouched. It is the kind of destination that asks only that you slow down and let it reveal itself. For couples who do, the honeymoon unfolds into a richer story of culture, cuisine, wellness and discovery, one that lingers after they have returned home.
